At Frontier Builders, we are revolutionizing the way log homes are built by integrating advanced CNC robotic technology into our milling process. Through a collaboration with Robotic Solutions Inc. (RSI) in Waukesha, WI, and leveraging ABB CNC robotic arms, we now offer a precision-crafted “piece-on-piece” log home design featuring vertical post corners. This state-of-the-art approach brings unmatched accuracy, consistency, and affordability to the timeless art of log home construction.

Precision Engineering Powered by Robotics

The cornerstone of this advancement is our adoption of ABB’s CNC robotic systems, further enhanced by RSI’s engineering expertise. RSI significantly improved the base robotic arm provided by Frontier Builders by:

  • Upgrading the spindle to increase cutting performance and durability.

  • Integrating a tool garage for automated tool changes during the milling cycle.

  • Adding custom software enhancements for optimized motion control and efficiency.

  • Offering valuable CAD/CAM software recommendations to streamline design workflows.

These upgrades allow our team to move seamlessly from digital designs to physical components, reducing human error while increasing production speed and design complexity.

Fully Integrated Log Milling Workflow

Our process begins with custom software that translates architectural blueprints into CNC-ready files. These instructions are then executed by the robotic arm with millimeter-level precision, ensuring consistent notch profiles, corner joints, and surface finishes.

This automation enhances our “piece-on-piece” design technique, which utilizes interlocking vertical posts at corners for structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. The outcome: precision-fitted logs that minimize on-site adjustments, reduce labor, and ensure airtight fits.

Hand-Scribed Wall Panels for Custom Fit

Despite our high-tech capabilities, we haven’t lost touch with traditional craftsmanship. Logs are transferred to our overhead Gantry Crane and placed in a jig for detailed inspection and fitting. Each log is:

  1. Measured and scribed manually to match the unique contours of adjacent logs.

  2. Chainsaw-trimmed along the scribe lines for a snug, customized fit.

  3. Fitted with gaskets and insulation in the scribe grooves to maximize energy efficiency and structural cohesion.

  4. Reassembled in the jig, aligned, and fastened into wall panels using all-thread rods that securely bind the logs.

This hybrid approach merges the warmth and individuality of hand craftsmanship with the consistency and efficiency of CNC automation.
